On Dubai code: Dubai Municipality’s published sewerage design guidelines govern connection to the public sewer network and do not include a standalone septic-tank sizing formula — most developed plots are required to connect to the network, and standalone septic/holding tanks are mainly used where no sewer connection exists. In that case, consultants in the UAE commonly size the tank against established international standards, subject to Dubai Municipality / Trakhees / relevant developer sign-off. Treat every figure below as a preliminary estimate, not an approved design — confirm the final size with a licensed engineer and the local authority.
1 · Design inputs
Used directly by the IPC/UPC bedroom table.
Auto-set to 2 persons/bedroom; drag to override with a known headcount.
IS 2470 default is 130 L/person/day for a home with piped supply.
UAE tankering is often more frequent than this design interval — see practice notes.
2 · Computed capacity
| Standard | Basis | Litres | US gal |
|---|---|---|---|
| IS 2470-style | Retention + sludge accumulation | — | — |
| BS 6297 | C = 2000 + 180 × occupants | — | — |
| IPC / UPC | Bedroom table | — | — |
The governing row (highlighted) sets the recommended size. UAE villa tanks in practice commonly run 3,000–5,000+ L even when a formula returns less, to absorb infrequent tankering and peak occupancy — see practice notes below.

4 · UAE practice notes
- Sewer connection comes first. Where a Dubai Municipality / DEWA sewer main is available, connection is normally mandatory and a septic system is not an approved alternative for a new plot.
- Soakaway pits are heavily restricted. Percolation-based disposal is largely phased out across Dubai’s urban area because of shallow, saline groundwater; most off-grid properties instead use a sealed tank emptied by licensed tanker rather than a traditional septic-and-soakaway system.
- Typical villa range. Precast concrete tanks sold in the UAE for a family villa commonly fall in the 3,000–5,000 L range, sized up for larger households, staff accommodation, or infrequent tankering access.
- Desludging is often more frequent. Where tankering (not soil absorption) is the only outlet, many households pump out every few weeks to months rather than on the 1–5 year cycle a formula-based sludge allowance assumes — the interval above only sizes the sludge storage margin, not the tankering schedule.
- Confirm before you build. Final tank size, materials, setback distances and connection method need sign-off from Dubai Municipality, Trakhees (for free-zone plots), or the relevant developer/community authority — this tool has no visibility into any of those requirements.
